Well if you live in the Southern Hemisphere and happen to be in Australia, then you may be aware that this Sunday is Father’s Day.
Woot Woot to me!
Breakfast in bed, gifts from the kids and wonderful calls from the extended family. Ah, there’s so much to look forward to.
But one key question remains, what should I get as my Father’s Day gift?
Well, I’m a Whiskey and Techy kind of guy so the options are rather limitless.
Last week I attended a whisky showcase held by Dan Murphys. This seemed like a low key event as it was difficult to find any information online to provide details. But register we did and boy, was it a great event.
There were easily a couple of hundred attendees (goodness knows how they found out about it) and there were over 41 different whiskeys and bourbons from around the world to sample. The difficulty in this, was the event was held on a Thursday so I had to moderate my ‘sampling’ as I had an early morning meeting the following day! Damn it!
The depth and range to sample was rather good and reflected the range generally stocked within the Dan Murphy group. The list included:
- Canadian Club 20yo.
- Crown Royal Reserve
- Jack Daniels
- Know Creek
- Rollins Tennessee Whiskey
- Wild Turkey
- Aultmore 12yo
- The Belvenie
- Glenfiddich 18yo and 26yo
- Glen Moray
- The Glenlivet
- Plus many more
From the 41 whiskeys that we sampled that night, one of the highlights was the Glenfiddich Excellence 26 year old single malt whiskey. However at over $500 Australian Dollars per bottle, I think I will wait for a very special occasion to crown my Whiskey shelf with this fine Dram.
From the sampling, one of my top two whiskeys came from the land of the rising sun…Suntory. On sample was the Kakubin Japanese Whisky. It was amazing on the pallet and nose. I must admit that I was surprised at how relatively affordable this whisky is and at $44.90 per 700ml, it should feature in everyone’s whiskey range. However don’t let the price tag fool you in thinking that it needs to be mixed or diluted. It was perfect as it was.
The other top ranking whiskey came from the Speyside Scottish country side…Glenfarclas 105 Cask Strength Single Malt Whiskey. The price tag on this single malt was $139.90 so a bit more on the pricey range; however it came with a ‘complimentary’ punch of 60% Alc/vol! This is not a featherweight whiskey and it almost evaporated on the tongue. This whiskey, given its high alcohol level, definitely needed a few drops of water to open it up and bring out its full potential. And boy, was it good.
So Darling, if you are reading this before Sunday and are wondering how to show me, you love me, the Suntory and Glenfarclas are a great way to start.
Having said that, Apple has just released the news that they will be announcing something special on the 7th September. All speculation is that it is the new iPhone 7 along with a highly anticipated update to the Macbook Pro range… Speculation is that these devices will be announced on the 7 September and if history is anything to go by, will be released to the market a fortnight after. Honey, I’m happy with a whisky bottle this Sunday and a new MacBook Pro in late September.
What do you think?
